or expect a call from me to as haha.

Date of trip: 15 Dec to 20 Dec'06 (6 Days)

Rough itinery
Singapore ---> ChiangmaiTiger Airways, $112.23 inc. all taxes and surcharges, only one flight per day leaving at 6.05am from budget terminal

Accomodation:
Read about a guesthouse in close proximity to the main city districts of Chiangmai which is very highly recommended and of supposed hotel standards. It's called SK House (www.sk-riverview.com), go view the website and i'm sure you'll be impressed. 500B for a fan-deluxe room which can accomodate 4 people so one person pays roughly $6 a night. Real good stuff... we can consider staying there for the entire period we are in Chiangmai.

Activities:
-TREKKING guesthouses usually have packages to bring backpackers around the area, subject to availability, costs between 600-900B a day. Alternatively we could rent bikes and go sight-seeing on our own around the countryside. We'll focus on making this trip a trip of experience and exploration :) for OAC-ians..
-VISITING NATIONAL HERITAGES the place is filled with temples (over a hundred of them!) but we'll probably just visit a few. Wat Phra Singh is one which is of particular historical significance. Doi Suthep is another.
-NIGHT MARKETS!! Might not be as famous as those in Taiwan but cheap, exotic stuff can be purchased here. The Chiangmai-ese take pride in making sure everything that exists under the sun is found under the roofs of this night market!
-CHIANGMAI NATIONAL MUSEUM not sure what is found here but considering it's in thailand's second biggest city it might be worth a look. besides the entry costs only 30B.
On the 3rd/4th day we will leave Chiangmai for the Chiangrai/Golden Triangle area. It's a 3hr trip by bus, or alternatively we could take a ferry along the Mae Nam Kok river all the way to Chiang Saen, around nine kilometres away from the actual Golden Triangle, which is a delta at the southern-most point of the Mekong River.

Accomodation:
Bungalows go for 200-250B, resorts for 300-700B a night and who knows how many people we can squeeze into one to save cost. The upper terraces of the guesthouse is a great place to watch the Mekong from, while mountain-bike and motorcycle rentals are also available there to get to the nearby town of Sop Ruak which is where the actual Golden Triangle is located.

Activities:
-BIKING TO SOP RUAK it's an easy bicycle ride to the town from chiang saen, about nine kilometres away. it's a big tourist attraction over there, with lots of souvenirs available. Ferry rides can be chartered along the Mekong River at 40B per person.
-HOUSE OF OPIUM it's a small museum about the history and the story of opium culture.

On the 5th day we have to take a bus from Chiang Saen back to Chiangrai (1.5hrs, leaving every 15 minutes from 6am to 6pm, costing 25B) before taking a coach to Bangkok (370-452B, 10 hrs) preferably overnight. If so, we'll reach in the morning, where we can sight-see a little or go shopping before taking a flight back to singapore (Tiger Airways, 2155B =$90 inc. of all taxes and surcharges leaving at 4.55pm on 20 Dec).

Do the math yourself, you'll find that it's possible to go for this trip with just $400 or max, $500. This is just a rough outline, there might be hidden costs incurred over the duration there especially if we're avid shoppers, but the main thing is that it's definitely affordable for the fun, exploration and experience that might come out of it!

overseas trip to bangkok/chiangmai/rai

heyoz! how come there hasn't been any enthusiasm for the overseas trip? a count of the people voting in the polls at yahoo groups stands at 11.. 11!! i take it that the others are not interested?
thanks to huifen for doing the research on the places we are probably going to. besides what has been written maybe you guys might want to know chiangmai is a great place for trekking and rock-climbing too with many operators offering guides and spots for these activities.. the shopping district is located in mainly a centralised area so to convenience ourselves i've researched on guesthouses and found one located nearby which is cheap and of supposedly hotel standards.. it's difficult if we were to book rooms only when we're there due to the large number of backpackers in the december-march period, so i suggest we book early rather than run the risk of having to settle for an inferior one. besides air tickets cost as little as 50% less if we book NOW. i know it's difficult to confirm now because 1) we are unsure about our schedules in the december time frame 2) we never know whether our parents will let us and 3) will we be broke then? but pls try your best to give me an answer by the end of the month if possible.. logistics and accomodation are best settled early!
the general plan for the trip is to either fly direct to chiangmai, or to fly to bangkok first (i'll get you guys to vote soon), maybe spend one day there shopping before we take a bus to chiangmai. at chiangmai we can spend 2-3 days trekking, shopping, and whatever sight-seeing we want to do. following that we could take a bus to chiangrai and visit the golden triangle of thailand/laos/cambodia by boat, sight-see, rough it out before heading back to chiangmai/bangkok (depending on availability) for the flight back to s'pore.. so we're looking at a 5 day +/- trip.. i know what i've come up so far is still sketchy because nothing's been finalised yet, promise to give you all the details as soon as i get the responses and plan something concrete!

only the best of friends
will endure the test of time.

Chiang Mai, Rai

As mentioned, our plan is to go to chiang mai? Hmmm. I tink we gotta start booking like NOW, to get good price u noe. I'm suggesting we all do a little bit of research and meet up maybe this weekend to discuss the proper itinerary, and thus the exact dates, and confirm the no of pple gg. the thing is we wan2 have backpacking, ideal is 4 pple, or at least in fours. The itinerary I'm suggesting is from Chiang Mai up north to Chiang Rai, to witness for ourselves the magnificence of the Mekong river. :) There'r other alternatives, e.g. bangkok-chiang mai-rai, chiang mai-rai-vietnam...

There's another alternative proposal by yujin, for us to head to Hongkong, den fly to Shenzhen rite?

Below are some stuff that I found out and summarised, for your reference. Let's all support our organiser - benji- by giving some response k.

lurve,fenny

weather. Unless you don't mind the almost daily torrential rain of the monsoon, the best time to visit Chiang Mai is between October and April; the other months are a virtual washout. The mildest temperatures are in December and January. Nights in Chiang Mai are regularly cooler than in southern Thailand.

health. be careful of water, theft, cheap guesthouses which forces u to take up their tour package, malaria, etc.

see. Chiang Mai's plethora of temples will probably exhaust you before you exhaust them. For variety, try a wander round the night bazaar, acquaint yourself with local culture at the museums, or practice your Buddhist calm under a palm tree in the city's gardens.

shop. Chiang Mai is undoubtedly the best place to stock up on silver jewellery, antiques, natural fibres and weaves. As it's Thailand's main handicraft centre, it's ringed by small cottage factories and workshops where you can watch craftspeople at work.

events. The week-long Winter Fair at the end of December is a great festival, as is the April Songkran Water Festival.

transport. Chiang Mai's airport takes regular traffic from Thailand's major cities (including seven daily flights from Bangkok), as well as from other regional centres. Buses also ply the route between Bangkok and Chiang Mai several times a day. The trip takes between 10 and 12 hours, depending on the money you pay. Trains also connect Chiang Mai to her southern capital.

accommodation. guesthouses cost between 100-800 baht

money. If you're travelling on a budget, you should be able to get by on around THB500.00 a day anywhere in Thailand. Visitors staying in comfortable hotels and eating at restaurants should budget on around THB600.00-THB1000.00 a day outside Bangkok and around double this amount when in the capital.

getting ard. The best way to go around Northern Thailand is by you own private vehicle. As most people don't come equipped with such a luxury then the next best thing is a rental. Rates are very good in this area with a Suzuki 4WD jeep available from around US$30 per day. These jeeps are suitable for mild off road experiences, are cheap to run and are fairly easy to drive. Passport and international driving licence are necessary. Rental of bicycles.

chiang rai. Just over 100km from Chiang Mai and about 940km from Bangkok this is a good place visit if you want to see a hill-tribe village or do some trekking. Features Golden Triangle and Mekong River.
traveling to chiang rai. Air conditioned buses leave from Chiang Mai's Bus Station No. 2 and take about 4 hours. Thai International have daily flights from Bangkok which take about 50 minutes.
The most interesting way to travel from Chiang Mai is first take the early morning bus to Fang and then a songthaew to Tha Thon. From there take a boat down the Kok River to Chiang Rai. However, be prepared for a long journey (around 10 hours in total).

by boat. A combined bus and boat trip to Chiang Rai can be made by taking a local bus from Chiang Mai to Tha Ton which takes approximately three hours, and continuing on a long-tail boat along the Mae Kok River (4-6 hours). The boat fare is 160 baht per person or 1,600 per boat.

by bus. The bus station in Chiang Rai city is located on Prasopsuk Road. Buses depart and arrive here regularly from many of the major towns throughout Thailand, as well as daily departures to and from Bangkok's Mor Chit 2 (Northern) Bus station. Inside the main terminal building is an information desk with all the routes, departure times and prices etc. There are different types of buses available; regular, air-conditioned and VIP air-conditioned with luxury reclining seats. Typical journey times are as follows: Destination Time(hrs) Bangkok 12 Chiang Mai 4 Chiang Khong 3 Chiang Saen/Golden Triangle 1.5 Phrae 4 Phayao 1.75 Nan 6 Khon Khaen 12 Phitsanoulok 6 There are also several private bus companies that operate coaches between Bangkok and Chiang Rai.

getting around. Chiang Rai is quite a small place so you can easily walk to destinations around the town centre. For longer journeys there are always plenty songthaews looking for customers.

Whilst in Chiang Rai it is worth visiting the Hill Tribe Foundation. They will tell you exactly where to find the Hill Tribe villages, which can save time, and they also have a constant supply of genuine items such as silver, embroidery, clothing etc for sale, but do not expect prices to be any lower. The Foundation is a non-profit making organisation and its mark-up is small. It pays high rates to the village craftsmen in an effort to maintain tribal income to a life-supporting level, in order that they do not return to opium poppy cultivation

http://www.1stopchiangmai.com/northern_thailand/

check out northern thailand

overseas trip?

YO YO!! who wants to go overseas this dec, hands up! haha.. okok.. let's take advantage of this school holidays of the girls and some major clear-leave periods by the army regulars and the remaining NSFs!
finances-wise it's probably quite likely that most girls (plus ryan after a month in europe) would opt for a trip across the causeway while the guys would prefer a destination outside of SEA.. so?? how about keeping our budgets low this time round (below $300) and save up for a longer trip next april/may/june? i know zw has floated the idea of hk this dec before., but it's looking increasingly unlikely we'll be able to go there this yr...
yea yea.. do u guys mind posting ur ideas of places y'all want to visit for this dec and if u're interested, for next yr too? that'll give me an idea of ur budgets, the type of destinations u prefer (cities, beaches, mountainous areas etc) and it'll really facillitate planning. for lower than $200 malaysia is the about only possibility (remember we spent close to that at kukup, bintan) while for 300 we could go to somewhere like phuket (jetstar is offering $105 each way inc. all surcharges) or even phom penh/siem reap to see the angkor wat.. oh yes btw don't think it's only july now so there's still lots of time k.. the sooner we can confirm the people going, the destination, the time of departure etc, the cheaper it will cost = more money to spend on shopping overseas!
oh haha btw while browsing the jetstar website i couldn't resist looking at the taipei and hk fare prices =)... i noe im crazy over taiwan.. $164 for one way to hk and $205 to taipei! these of course are prices quoted for the busy dec period so im sure it'll be cheaper come next may... haha i think besides me, zhemin and tze have also expressed interest before in taiwan rite?? hopefully more people will be interested!!
babes and dudes save money hor!! *can't be over-stressed*

national day

HEY there ppl!! now i'm busy mugging (and really tired of it too.. close to 3 weeks of straight mugging without a single break..) and just daydreaming about what i wanna do when i get back to singapore.. and the number one thing is to meet up with all you guys on national day! so how about we meet up to watch fireworks on national day? (ok i'm trying really hard to recall all the places we pass by.. lol.. for a more accurate picture, please consult jz, our navigator. heez) cycling down orchard road was really something new but something not very fun to try either! i think we probably got cursed by the thousands of pedestrains who were out to do their shopping at the GSS!

onto scotts road and towards newton circus hawker centre. there we had a super expensive supper and i was faced with the disappointment of not having my much-looked-foward-to popiah! sobs! up till this point, the route was still pretty much interesting. beyond this, it was cycling down nearly-empty and uninteresting roads, stopping at the many many traffic lights, making our way down (or up?) serangoon road and towards hougang. and next checkpoint: koon's house. dearest koon has a very innovative way of opening his door, which i shall not elaborate for safety reasons. lol.

yes likoon has very kindly offered us his toilet and home as water checkpoint. from there we proceeded on to bedok reservoir... where the girls stubbornly plant ourselves at one end of the reservoir while the guys rode over to the toilet for a "better resting area".. and finally after that, we headed back towards ecp and arrived at our destination at a very early timing of 5am. we didn't follow the whole of our jr's route coz it's madness! from bedok reservoir, they continue to go to tampines, loyang, changi village and the route outside changi airport, arriving at ecp at around 7.30am! we're too old for all that adventure, i'm afraid. lol.

i still prefer our old route. i like the scavanger hunt that kicked off the bike hike (i don't think they have any games this year! it was just cycling cycling cycling.), exciting uphills and downhills (more of the latter, frankly speaking) along changi prison, our silly games at changi village and the ride along changi airport. as for the new route.. kallang river was something new, but i wouldn't want to go weaving in and out on a bike among all the pedestrians at orchard road anymore. lol.. as for the later part of the route, too much traffic lights and uninteresting scenery. hmm seems like it's a pretty long entry! (longest so far?) hope i din bore you guys! =D

yings -muaks-

hey it's getting kinda passive in here so i thought u need some NOISE maker! lol... anyway this weekend is bikehike! finally a different route! it'd be interesting. speaking of which.. one day we should go night cycling on our own and go makan supper at geylang.. =D cya there!
yings

yoz!!!!!! how's everyone?
